IN-SITU SOIL TREATMENT AND REMEDIATION | CONTAMINATED SOIL REMEDIATION

Soil Remediation for the Environment

Soil contamination or soil pollution is often caused by industrial mining or agricultural activity that leaves chemicals in the ground. Sometimes contaminated soil sites are the locations of

  • chemical leached from waste sites and landfills,
  • where dissolved or suspended chemicals are carried by waste water,
  • leaking underground storage tanks,
  • improper disposal of agricultural or industrial chemicals,
  • lead from bullets contaminating gun ranges.

The biggest pollutants are

  • mineral tailings and waste-flows from mining,
  • lead in soil from various sources,
  • fertilizers and insecticides that are applied incorrectly,
  • oil and fuel dumping.

Prosecution of polluters:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other agencies monitor and try to regulate levels of contamination in soil in accordance with the so-called "Superfund," or the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liabilities Act. Under the law the EPA can require those responsible for contamination to clean up polluted soil or pay for the cost of cleanup. Each day of non-compliance after the order can cost the polluter $37,500 for each day of non-compliance.

Environmental Soil Remediation:

Soil Washing--uses surfactants and water. The soil is placed in a wash solution that either dissolve contaminants, or suspend the particles of contaminant in the wash, separated by size, then carrying them away. Bioremediation makes use of microorganisms of fungi to break down organic contaminants (or even petroleum products) so they can be separated from the soil and removed or destroyed.

Thermal Desorbtion--is used for non-organic waste contamination. Contaminated solids are heated to the boiling point of the oil or other contaminants. The liquidized contaminants are pumped away and either to a thermal oxidizer or condensed in a vapor recovery process to be reclaimed (if the contaminant can be re-used).

Thermal soil remediation uses steam and hot air injection, electric current, or other powerful heat-producing methods to bring contaminants to the vapor point along with steam from trapped moisture. The vaporized (or volatilized) contaminants can be stripped away and removed.

ENVIRONMENTAL SOIL REMEDIATION FOR HIGH LEVELS OF LEAD - AVOID HEALTH HAZARDS AND FINES.

Elevated levels of lead in soil can have a negative environmental impact.  On top of that, if soil lead levels exceed Environmental Protection Agency quality guidelines, federal, state and local fines can occur. In either case, Environmental Soil Remediation is necessary and MT2 can help.

It is important to remember that lead is a naturally occurring bluish-gray metal found in the earth's crust, and can also be found in natural bodies of water.  In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency states that natural levels of lead are anywhere between 50 and 400 parts-per-million.  Soil can become contaminated beyond these levels, however, through various means.  Most common are past industrial use, lead-based paint flaking off houses and buildings, leaded gasoline pollution, and old pipes that contain lead.
But firing ranges are an obvious source as well, due to lead bullets and fragments.

LEAD POISONING AT SHOOTING RANGES AND ENVIRONMENTAL SOIL REMEDIATION

Over time, lead and lead fragments from ammunition starts to build up in the soil in and around firing ranges. The lead-infected soil poses a danger to the environment and to humans. There is very little doubt that lead is a significant health threat to humans. Exposure to the heavy metal causes serious neurological problems, nausea, fatigue, organ damage, mental impairment and even death. Children are often the most at risk for adverse health effects from lead exposure due to their developing brains and neurological systems.

The world health organization states that lead exposure is responsible for up to 143,000 deaths, and 600,000 new cases of children developing intellectual disabilities each year. Lead exposure can cause serious illness and disability, and can lead to severe law suits. One example of this is Jose and Guillermina Sierra, who paid 350,000 dollars each to take care of the lead problems in their housing units, but failed to alert their tenants that there were lead issues. Land owners who do not regularly test their land for possible hazards can also be held accountable by the law under your individual state law. Employers who find lead in their work space are required to disclose this information to their employees as well, under the OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Administration)

Approximately 40 million Americans enjoy frequenting shooting ranges. In 2010, NBC News reported that a 20 children and teens tested positive for lead poisoning after spending time at a Vancouver, Washington firing range. Studies conducted by the State of Alaska Epidemiology revealed that exposure to lead is the largest cause of lead poisoning in children aged 6 to 17.

Owners of gun ranges are not only required to protect their customers from lead exposure but also their employees. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) can inspect and levy fines against the firing range if it is determined that workers at the firing range have experienced lead exposure. Any time a gun range employee is found to have an elevated blood-lead level of 25 micrograms or higher, then OHSU will investigate the gun range and soil for lead contamination. If lead contamination is found, then OHSU may issue fines to the firing range.

Environmental soil remediation is the professional cleanup of lead from soil. The process renders the area safe for adults and children. The lead-laced at the firing range is sifted for lead and treated with a patented process known as ECOBOND® which removes the lead from the soil. The clean, lead-free soil is then replaced. Please contact us today to learn about our patented ECOBOND® process.

On site Soil remediation technique

Anyone beginning the process must know which type is appropriate. Given the situation, in-situ or ex-situ treatment and remediation may make the most sense.

1. In-situ bioremediation: In this process, the bioremediation takes place in the subsurface like the groundwater or soil. Some advantages of this type are lower costs, total elimination of the contaminants, and lower risk factor to those around it. This is also less invasive with limited human involvement. That said, the surrounding environment can impact the ability to transform the hazardous materials, and it hast to be monitored closely and consistently.

2. Ex-situ bioremediation: An alternative to in-situ, this process puts the tainted soil in above-ground treatment area and eliminates contaminants using the indigenous microbial population. The result is ideally water and carbon dioxide. Oxygen is a very important part of this process as it is key to the growth of the good bacteria, so the excavation methods are therefore that much more important. This method has proven time and again to be effective but is not as versatile as it may not work on certain metals and soils.

PROTECTING WET LANDS AND WATER BODIES FROM SHOOTING RANGE ACTIVITIES IS A GOOD INVESTMENT

The effect of lead poisoning to humans, animals and the environment is well documented and costly.  Protecting wet lands and water bodies from shooting range activities is a good investment because it saves lives, the environment and many dollars in the long run. Lead contamination of water and wet lands can come either from direct shooting over the area or via drain-off near the shooting range.  Animals, such as birds, mistake the shot for food and ingest it.  This directly introduces the lead into the food chain.

The effect of lead on animals has been devastating. Frogs and other amphibians are often first to exhibit symptoms due to the permeable nature of their skin.  Malformations, illness and death are often seen in lead exposed amphibians.  When lead is present in their environment, birds develop "drooping wings", digestive or neurological issues.

In some cases, the lead can fall into the sediment and over time, seep into the ground water supply.  MT2 utilizes their proprietary lead treatment technology called ECOBOND® to protect the sensitive natural environment to free lead from sediments in wetlands around firing ranges.

The Investment Is Worth It

The toll on the environment and wildlife alone are well worth the investment.  However, not cleaning it up can cost a fortune.  A recent lawsuit in Illinois against a gun club for lead contamination of a creek could have cost $18 million in fees.  MT2 can save up to 30%-50% on the cost of the abatement project.  The investment in an MT2 lead abatement project is a much wiser choice than the alternative of EPA fees, legal fees and long-term health costs for people exposed to lead.

Protecting Wet Lands and Water Bodies from Shooting Range Activities Through a Lead Reclamation Process

There is very little doubt that the lead produced by firing ranges is valuable. The average firing range uses 25,000 to 500,000 pounds of lead. Unfortunately, owners of firing ranges located near wetlands and water bodies often mistakenly believe that the valuable lead is un-retrievable.  MT2, the nation's #1 firing range maintenance & lead reclamation company, has recently proven this is a not true. MT2 takes protecting wet lands and water bodies from shooting range activities seriously. They have a patented a technique to retrieve the lead without harming the eco-system of the water bodies and surrounding fauna.

Prevent Bullet Ricochet at Gun Ranges to produce Your City Safer

Gun ranges less complicated more important to a community than most people realize.  Anyone that owns a firearm recognizes that they offer an increased service than just allowing people space for some fun target practice.  Gun ranges supply a safe place for law enforcement officers to hone their skills and so grow their power to protect the city in particular.  It also gives new gun owners an opportunity to learn how to better handle a firearm safely, so they can stay safe you should definitely so insulated.  Improper safety with a gun range can result in some major health issues including lead poisoning and hearing problems.  With that in mind, in order to best help the individuals and also the community, law enforcement officers should have the room itself being as safe as you can.  Probably the most common issues at gun ranges will be the frequent ricochet of bullets, and MT2 seeks to help you ranges prevent this.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has specific criteria for design, but owners and clients might still help alleviate problems with bullet ricochet at gun ranges.  Here are a few considerations that experts and former the police suggest remember when designing and choosing an assortment.

Gun Range Lead Removal is vital for safety

Targets - metal targets increase chances for bullets to ricochet.

Bullets - round nose bullets are more likely to ricochet than flat nose as they generally move at the higher velocity

Side Berm/Backstops/Safety Fan - should be placed with an appropriate distance to trap all bullets that may ricochet

Manger or Extra Layer - Adding an assortment will guarantee proper lead collection and cleanup.

Firing Ranges May Be Walking Away From a Fortune in Lead

A clean and well-maintained range will likely attract more customers because shooters will know the range is safe and there will be no chance of ricochet due to lead buildup. It's for these reasons that those who operate a range should seek out an experienced lead reclamation company for routine maintenance and lead reclamation.

Fortunately, a Colorado-based company, MT2, LLC, is leading the effort to unlock the hidden profit from spent lead in firing range soil. In the past year alone, MT2 has reclaimed over 1,000,000 pounds of lead from ranges nationwide including private clubs and law enforcement agencies.

Over the past decade, MT2 has credited over $4,000,000.00 to range owners from lead recycling on their firing range, while working closely with them to implement firing range Best Management Practices (BMPs) to protect shooters and the environment for environmental remediation

A BMP Program includes removal and recycling of lead bullets and bullet fragments; sampling, analysis and monitoring of soil and groundwater conditions. Utilizing MT2’s patented ECOBOND® lead treatment technology, treated soils are considered non-hazardous and can be replaced back onto range berms.

MT2 is the nation’s #1 firing range maintenance & lead reclamation company, has never left a job uncompleted and can help you clean your range to unlock the value you have in spent lead.

“We are pleased to offer a free range evaluation for indoor or outdoor ranges.” stated James Barthel, MT2 CEO.

CLEANING UP SHOOTING RANGES

Studies of indoor firing ranges by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that

  • Thousands of employees had elevated lead levels in their blood.
  • One study found employees tested during the cleaning and renovation of a shooting range, 46% of those working on the cleaning (both range employees and construction workers) had elevated blood lead levels.
  • Even the families of those employed at the gun range are at risk. Testing found that of four construction workers, three children and two adult family members tested for elevated blood lead levels.

Effects on the Environment:

The environmental Working Group estimates that firing ranges put more lead into the environment than any other US industry, with the exception of mining and manufacturing.

  • Tens of billions of rounds of ammunition fired every year translates to hundreds of tons of lead per day.

Lead, one of the most environmentally sensitive metals, has been the metal of choice for bullet manufacture.

  • Many bullets are jacketed in copper which makes them more environmentally sensitive in wet soils because of the galvanic corrosion potential of the copper.
  • Bullets that don't stay intact, usually bullets from rifles, expose maximum lead to the soil over a larger surface area.
  • In outdoor ranges, where soil may be wet, the lead contamination may spread into water tables.

Shooting Range cleanup:

The Environmental Protection Agency recently developed four point guidelines for the reclamation of firing ranges.

  1. Sift munitions fragments from the soil. These fragments can be recycled (Recycling lead fragments can be lucrative. Estimates are that shooting range owners recover millions of dollars’ worth of metals from cleanups. Recycling also exempts the contamination from hazardous waste reporting and management requirements).
  2. Analyze samples of the remaining soil to determine how much contamination has leached away. If leachable level is below the approved EPA limit no further action is needed. Proper testing methods must be used.
  3. Analyze the soil in layers to assess the extent of downward contamination.
  4. Treat or dispose of contaminated soil in a hazardous waste landfill or use on-site stabilization, solidification, and soil washing techniques.

Live A Cleaner Life With These Green Energy Tips

You might be aware of green energy, but do you know that it's not just good for the environment? Usually, green energy is presented as being excellent for the environment, but it is also good for you personally. It allows you to save money on energy costs. This article contains some good ways to start using green energy.

Try setting the air conditioning to run just one degree Celsius warmer during the summer and one degree Celsius cooler during the winter. You will not even notice this difference in temperature, and you'll save a lot of money and energy. In addition, the amount of carbon being used will decrease by around 14%.

When you're coming up with a design for your outdoor lighting project, think about getting lamps that are solar powered. Solar-powered lamps are usually inexpensive, and they don't need any power source besides the sun. Not only does this save energy. As an added benefit, you are spared the trouble of running an outdoor wiring system.

Keep your windows shaded when trying to conserve energy. Additionally, curtains and blinds can enhance the energy-saving effect you achieve. By utilizing these ideas, you will drop your AC costs dramatically as your house remains cooler during the summer. You'll save money as well as energy.

Make use of fans inside the home. You can easily use floor fans or have a ceiling fan installed to increase airflow inside the home. You can use these even if you already have an air conditioner because you can turn the thermostat higher and just use the fans for air movement.

If switching your home to solar power is beyond your financial capabilities, try switching just one room, like a bedroom, to solar power. There are solar kits available online that can help you green a room, and this will positively affect your energy bills and carbon footprint for years to come.

Set your computer so that it goes to sleep when you are not using it for more than 10-15 minutes at any given time. While most people believe that screensavers save energy they do not, and should not be used as an alternative to placing your computer in a sleeping state.

Go green on your coffee break by bringing your own cup. If you usually order a Tall Latte at Starbucks, bring a tall re-usable coffee mug with you. Every time you ask your favorite coffee shop to mix your drink in your own cup, you are helping to green your environment.
Soil remediation is imperative for industries that handle or manufacture toxic substances such as lead

Firing Range Safety

Ohio Department of Corrections Training Academy "Gets the Lead Out"
MT2, LLC’s firing range reclamation removes nearly 100,000 pounds of firing range lead to mitigate potential safety and environmental hazards associated with lead in firing range soils and berms
Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 17, 2014 After years of shooting at the Ohio Department of Corrections Training Academy (CTA), firing range berms were saturated with lead, which increased the likelihood of “splashback” (rounds that ricochet off lead left behind in the berm and send metal fragments back at the shooter). The more bullets you shoot, the more likely the splashback, and the greater the potential for injury to officers. Although the CTA was not obligated to conduct range lead abatement, they chose a proactive approach to improve officer safety and mitigate potential hazards associated with lead in range soils and berms. This approach incorporated the US Environmental Protective Agency (USEPA) Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Ranges. According to the US EPA BMPs, “the most important BMP for lead management is lead reclamation.” In addition to concerns for shooter safety, lead is a toxic material that can potentially leach into groundwater or be ingested by wildlife.
“I am very satisfied in the quality of work performed by MT2’s experienced staff. They conducted their work in a very professional manner, meeting and exceeding CTA’s expectations." Jerry R Juniper
CTA Safety & Health Coordinator
To implement firing range remediation and improvements for officer safety, CTA reached out to an experienced firm, MT2, LLC (MT2) of Colorado to conduct lead reclamation and range maintenance at the range. MT2 has been “Getting the Lead Out” since 2000; they have completed over 800 firing range projects nationwide and recovered over 11,000,000 lbs of lead. The recent tasks completed by MT2 included removal of spent lead bullets and bullet fragments to improve shooter safety and to protect the environment by preventing lead from leaving the range. MT2’s firing range maintenance tasks included the use of its specialty lead recovery equipment and field technologies to successfully remove nearly 100,000 lbs (50 tons) of lead for recycling and restoring the range berms to meet recommended safety specifications. MT2 completed all tasks in less than two weeks, working with the CTA to provide minimal impact to the officer’s training schedule. Jerry R Juniper, CTA Safety & Health Coordinator commented “I am very satisfied in the quality of work performed by MT2’s experienced staff. They conducted their work in a very professional manner, meeting and exceeding CTA’s expectations. My recommendations for MT2 have been and will be expressed.” About MT2: MT2 is recognized as the nation's #1 professional contractor providing environmental firing range services in all 50 states. Choose the Right Airsoft Gun

When you go to purchase an airsoft gun you will want to have done your research on the different types of them. There are three different types of airsoft guns; spring airsoft guns, electric, and gas-powered guns.

An airsoft spring gun is a type that uses a spring to assist the firing of the BB. It is an affordable type of airsoft gun and is normally styled in the pistol or handgun form. This is a great type to choose if you are a beginner or new to airsoft guns. Spring guns in the form of rifles are not for beginners. It shoots out a more powerful force and is considered stronger than most electric or gas powered guns.

It is so cheap because it doesnt take any external power like gas or electricity. However, you still need to cock and re-cock the slider every time you go to shoot. This is what you cannot shoot automatic or even semi automatic. Airsoft spring handguns are the least powerful form if you compare them to the other two types. Keep in mind that spring guns are only good for ten feet shooting ranges. When a firing range needs help with lead shot reclamation, they need to consider the best options.

Gas powered guns are powered by gas that is inserted in the butt of the airsoft gun. They are also called GBB. The gas for the guns is sold in the form of tin cans and looks a lot like an aerosol can.

In most cases, CFC-free gas is used. Most of the one that use gas use HFC134a. Some do require a more powerful type of gas, so beware when you are purchasing your GBB. You will always want to use the right type of gas because it will damage the gun and could cause harm to yourself. People purchase gas airsoft guns because they are more accurate than any other type. They are also heavier and have more detail for design than the other two types of guns. Gas powered airsoft guns are not for beginners because they are more difficult to handle and care for. This is more of an automatic, machine gun.

Electric guns are powered by battery. Normally, your electric gun will take four AAA batteries. You will most likely want to get the rechargeable batteries because they dont last long. Airsoft electric guns are also spring guns. Electric guns have to have a spring to be compressed, but with an electric gun you dont have to manually cock the slider for every shot. Because you dont have to cock the gun yourself, you are able to get fully automatic shots from an electric gun. Normally an electric gun can shoot up to 280 feet away with a .2g pellet BB. You can also find semi-automatic guns that have electric power.

LEAD REMEDIATION FOR YOUR OUTDOOR FIRING RANGE | GUN RANGE LEAD CLEANUP

Lead Remediation for Your Outdoor Firing Range | Gun Range Lead Cleanup
Outside firing ranges can end up putting a huge amount of lead into the soil and water. There are a number of sources that detail all of the reasons why this is such a risk, but the biggest risk is in lead poisoning, which presents through fatigue, nausea, organ damage, and mental impairment. All of these are particularly dangerous to firearms instructors and workers who are responsible for cleaning ranges. These individuals are exposed to much higher levels of lead over time, which can lead to a dangerous buildup in their bodies. Lead remediation allows the land associated with a firing range to be reclaimed. Lead remediation isn't just about removing the bullets and bullet fragments from the land, though this is certainly a valuable step that will prevent the soil and water from being contaminated further. Bullets and bullet fragments that are left for longer periods of time, particularly periods associated with the freeze/thaw cycle, are more likely to break down, ultimately causing greater problems than bullets, casings, and fragments that are removed promptly. Lead remediation takes it a step further, utilizing a chemical conversion process on the lead remaining in the soil so that it is no longer considered dangerous. Soil treated through MT2's ECOBOND® lead treatment technology is considered non-hazardous, which means that it's no longer dangerous to instructors, shooters, and cleanup workers who s spend a great deal of time on the range. This is doubly important for closed ranges that are no longer in use, because the lead deposited into the soil will gradually increase in concentration and make its way into groundwater until it is removed. On that note, if you are considering closing your firing range, please contact us for some very important things to make sure you do in the correct order. We have extensive experience in helping to clean the lead from a firing range that is being closed permenantly. Lead, antimony, copper, zinc, and arsenic are chemicals often found in soil on firing ranges, however none is more common or more dangerous than lead. A typical projectile, or bullet, is approximately 85% lead and fragmented bullets create lead dust which can transport off-site by wind or precipitation. Lead has documented detrimental effects on the environment and the health of humans, particularly children.

Lead poisoning causes fatigue, nerve damage, hearing and vision impairment, and in children it can cause damage to the brain, development delays, and liver and kidney damage, according to the EPA. Therefore, the proper remediation of lead in soil is necessary to prevent these damaging effects.
The first step of soil remediation is proper sampling of the soils on-site. Lead exists as both solid particles and as compounds absorbed into the soil. It is important to test for both in two major areas, where the bullets are shot and deposited and any groundwater in the area. A laboratory tests the samples and can tell what kind of contaminants are on the firing range, including lead, arsenic, and other chemicals, as well as the concentration of lead in the soil, or how much there is. Soil testing allows MT2 to create the best possible plan and most cost-effective solution to maximize the amount of lead removed from the soil. Once the type and amount of lead in the soil are determined, there are traditionally three ways in which MT2 removes the lead from the contaminated soil: the lead is removed for disposal or recycling by a certified recycling company, contaminated soil is treated and removed from the firing range as a nonhazardous material, or the soil is replaced.

To treat soil, MT2 uses our innovative and patented ECOBOND® technology, which treats soil at firing ranges effectively and safely. For more information on MT2 or soil remediation, please feel free to contact us.

MT2 PROTECTS OUR POLICE OFFICERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT FROM THE DANGERS OF LEAD

Our 'boys in blue' have enough to worry about on the job, the last thing they need is more rogue lead flying at them when participating in routine target practice. Many people may not even give this topic a second thought, but all those spent lead shot rounds have to gosomewhere.Unfortunately, where they end up going is into the lead catcher or soil of shooting ranges. As the spent lead builds up, it creates a ricochet hazard for anyone present. Additionally, all this lead buildup can result in the contamination of the environment and nearby water sources. To combat this, MT2,the Nation’s #1 Firing Range Maintenance & Lead Reclamation Company, has developed a patented system for removing the lead shot from shooting ranges both indoor and outdoor. Our unique recovery system is guaranteed to reclaim the highest amount of lead possible from the impacted soil of your shooting range. Not only do we remove the lead from the soil, but any remaining microscopic particles of lead can be treated and neutralized with our patented ECOBOND® technology. Upon treatment with ECOBOND®, the soil can be replaced on the range, or removed from the site as a non-hazardous material. This is because ECOBOND® bonds with and neutralizes the lead particles, effectively eliminating the hazard of lead poisoning or contamination.Law enforcement firing ranges are busy places. As police officers come in to get the training they need to use their firearms in the event of an emergency, these busy ranges can see dozens of shooters over the course of a day. That means countless bullets smashing through targets, which means that the risk of lead poisoning is substantial in ranges that are improperly cleaned. According to a recent news story from the Seattle Times, gun ranges are one of the leading places where civilians acquire lead poisoning, and the threat only increases for members of the police force, who are exposed to these ranges on a regular basis. Worse is the danger of secondary contamination, when officers take home the lead powder on their clothing and expose spouses and vulnerable children. We call this “Proximity Contamination”.That's where MT2 comes in: protecting police officers and their families from the dangers of lead exposure. MT2 provides complete range maintenance and improvement, including improvements and lead remediation services to help ensure that your shooting range is as clean as possible. MT2 is highly experienced with a range of firing range services, serving over 800 ranges across the nation since 2000. One of the largest projects served by MT2 is the NYPD training range, which sees shooting practice from more than 40,000 officers and recruits each year. It's an extensive process, and one that MT2 is honored to provide. MT2's process isn't just about removing the obvious sources of lead from the area, recycling lead bullets and bullet fragments. The process helps render the area safe so that members of the police force can train with the assurance that they aren't being exposed to dangerous levels of lead that could be hazardous to them or to the members of their families. At MT2, we proudly work to help protect our officers, as well as any other patrons to firing ranges. Plus, we do so in an environmentally conscious manner. No other company can match our expertise as we have the experience of over eight hundred shooting range reclamation projects under our belts.Remember, shooting range lead reclamation is good for your business, good for customers, and good for the environment. FIRING RANGE REMEDIATION FOR MUNICIPALITIES | BEST PRACTICES FOR MUNICIPALITIES TO CONSIDER FOR FIRING RANGE REMEDIATION

Municipal firing ranges, including those used for law enforcement training and not open to the public, need to have a lead remediation plan. While the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA) doesn't approve shooting ranges or lead management on the ranges, the agency is concerned about it. The federal agency created the report, "Best Management Practices for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Ranges," to discuss how to handle lead on ranges. The report spells out procedures and processes range operators should follow. At the same time, the report cautions it is not the final word on lead and shooting ranges. "Following the steps set forth in this guidance should result in compliance with applicable regulations. EPA does not make any guarantee or assume any liability with respect to the use of any information or recommendations contained in this document," the report's opening statement reads. "This guidance does not constitute rulemaking by the EPA and may not be relied on to create a substantive or procedural right or benefit enforceable, at law or in equity, by any person." Any municipal government that's had dealings with the EPA knows the difficulty in managing permits, meeting the requirements and understanding the regulations. Regulations are also subject to change, especially when the administration changes in Washington. Just following the recommendations in this EPA report may be more than small municipalities can handle. With tight budgets and employees in the public works department already stretched thin, finding the time to handle lead at a firing range is next to impossible. Add to this the fact that lead is a heavy metal. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration has a list of safety regulations for people who do handle lead. That's a lot of rules and regulations to understand and implement. MT2 offers firing range remediation services to the federal government agencies all the way down to small rural cities. If you are part of a local government with firing range, whether open to the public or not, contact us to discuss EPA-accepted remediation plans. Avoid the problems with lead and a firing range by letting the experts handle it.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE SAFER BECAUSE OF PROPER GUN RANGE CLEANING

Even though the construction industry completely banned the use of lead in 1977, and state health reports from the 1960s warned of lead poisoning due to working in gun ranges, law enforcement officers across the country remain exposed to dangerous levels of lead at shooting ranges that fall far short of passing OSHA standards. According to the Seattle Times, “Lead contamination at police-operated ranges has gone unchecked for years because federal and state regulators rarely scrutinize them, …”police lights 400 clr 5494Lead is an ingredient in ammunition; lead particles form as a bullet travels down a gun barrel, and are released into the atmosphere as the gun fires. The particles are small enough to remain airborne, where they can be inhaled. Over time, the lead will precipitate onto surfaces, where it will sit until intentionally removed. When ingested or inhaled lead can cause headaches, muscle and joint weakness or pain, excessive tiredness or lethargy, behavioral problems or irritability, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, constipation, renal and respiratory failure and death. For those already exposed, the most effective remediation therapy may be chelation, which introduces a chemical substance to bind hazardous materials in the blood so the body can excrete them.Avoiding exposure to lead remains the best treatment. Gun range cleaning would appear to be the simple solution for law enforcement agencies. Surfaces in locations where lead is used (shooting ranges) should be wiped off continuously. Properly installed and maintained ventilation systems can remove airborne lead particles before they are inhaled. ANNUAL GUN RANGE CLEANING; GOOD FOR THE EARTH, GOOD FOR BUSINESS

You won't find it on any newspaper's front page, but lead buildup in firing ranges can be a serious problem. Not many people realize just how much lead shot is spent at shooting ranges annually.Lead poisoning and exposure in gun ranges, both indoor and outdoor, is a serious issue. Spent lead shot builds up in the soil and the padding, posing a danger to shooters from both ricochet and the buildup of lead in the environment. A lead level of less than ten in a person's bloodstream can manifest as high blood pressure and other problems with the cardiac system. Additionally, it can lead to damage to the nervous system, kidneys, digestive problems, reproductive system, brain function, and more. This is why the contamination of the environment by lead is such a large and dangerous problem.

To remedy this, MT2 has developed a patented system of lead shot removal and soil decontamination for both indoor and outdoor firing ranges. Our methods can completely clear an indoor or outdoor range of dangerous lead shot, dust, and particles. We recover 95%-100% of spent lead shot from bullet traps and soil for recycling, while using our patented EcoBond technology to neutralize any lead particles still left in the soil.
Not only will annual lead abatement be good for the health of shooters and the environment, it will also let customers know your firing range is safe and Eco-friendly. No one wants to shoot at a range full of lead dust and in danger of injury by ricocheting bullet fragments. By regularly cleaning your firing range of lead, you're letting your customers know that you care for their safety and satisfaction. For more information about MT2's patented gun range cleaning services and more, we invite you to visit our website.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEAD SHOT RECLAMATION AT FIRING RANGES

Spending an afternoon at a shooting range is one of the many past times gun owners enjoy. However, ranges aren't just for gun enthusiasts. Professional shooters, hunters, and law enforcement personnel routinely come to firing ranges to practice and hone their skill. As such, a firing range sees much lead fly on a daily basis.
So, what happens to that lead once it's ejected from the barrel and either finds its way into a target or misses? Much of it finds its way into the soil or the embankment of the shooting range. If allowed to keep building, these spent lead shots can begin causing problems around the range. In fact, there are three main reasons why lead should be removed from the range in a timely manner.

Safety
As lead shot builds up in the padding behind targets, it drastically increases the chance of ricochet. This poses a threat to shooters and range workers alike, as ricochet bullets are still powerful enough to cause serious harm.
Environmental Protection
If a range is not properly treated for lead buildup, the risk of lead contamination in the surrounding soil and groundwater is heightened. Contamination of groundwater with lead can pose serious risks to both human health and the surrounding environment.

Value Of Reclaimed Lead
Lead isn't all bad, in fact reclaimed lead can be a highly profitable commodity. Prices are at all-time highs for heavy metal scrap such as lead, and it is highly desirable for the producers of ammunition. Barron's reports that "Prices of lead are up 18% since March, and now there’s talk of limited supplies." This presents a great opportunity for gun ranges to optimize their lead reclamation and clean up their firing range.

Of course, a range can reap further benefits from routine lead reclamation projects than those described above. A clean and well-maintained range will likely attract more customers. Plus, shooters will know the range is safe and there will be no chance of ricochet due to lead buildup.
It's for these reasons those who operate a range should seek out a lead reclamation company for routine maintenance.
At MT2, our patented and unmatched lead reclamation techniques can ensure the range will be left even nicer than when we started. We are listed on the EPA's website for contaminated site clean-up and have worked for the NYPD as well as the United States Department of Defense. If you would like to learn more about our services, we are pleased to offer a free range evaluation for indoor or outdoor ranges. SHOOTING RANGE REMEDIATION METHODS

It's a fun day when you hop in the car with your prized guns and head to the shooting range for the day. But have you ever thought about what happens to all those rounds you fire off? Shooting Range Remediation is very important to the environment and to society. Let's take a look at why and some ways to clean up the range.Impact of Lead Migration Bullet-shooting range remediation-shutterstock 267020726
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s “Corrective Action at Outdoor Shooting Ranges Guidance Document” states oxidation occurs when lead particles exposed to air results in dissolution when exposed to acidic water. The dissolved lead then migrates through soil, rock fragments, and storm water runoffs into ground water creating health problems for citizens in the area.Lead migration can cause many health problems for people in the surrounding area of the range including kidney dysfunction, high blood pressure, cognitive and memory issues as well as neurological issues. And not only does the harmful migration affect people, it destructively affects animals as well.Benefits of Shooting Range RemediationShooting range remediation benefits a lot of aspects according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency including the range, the people using it, and others around it.

Some benefits are:
Less ContaminationWith less contamination put into the air and ground, people, animals, and the environment surrounding the range are out of harms way when it comes to lead migration.Improved Public RelationsA clean and advantageous range will improve public image and lead to customer satisfaction. Most legal and government actions start with citizens so a clean and maintained range will keep those citizens happy and reduce the risk and threat of lead migration issues.Supports RecyclingRecycling lead material and fragments usually is at no cost to the range and sometimes actually acquire a profit of the sold reclaimed lead.ConsiderationsWhen deciding the best way to keep a range clean, consider these factors:Physical Characteristic Size of rangeA large range has a greater chance of dispersion of damaging lead materials. A smaller range with a more concentrated shotfall area has a smaller risk of migration and allows for easier cleanup.SoilDepending on the pH levels of the soil at the range, the greater or less chance of lead migration. Lead will react more to acidic conditions, a pH level greater than 8. Soil with more neutral pH levels, 7-8.5, allows for the lead to “bind” to the soil preventing the lead to migrate to the subsurface. The density of the soil also makes a difference. The denser the soil is, the less migration. The more sandy/gravely the soil is, the more migration.Groundwater

The closer the groundwater is to the surface, the greater potential for dissolved lead to reach the water and spread.PrecipitationPrecipitation and water “provide means by which lead is transferred” meaning the more rain falls on the range, the more likely the lead is to migrate.Operation CharacteristicsLead VolumeKeeping records of the quantity of bullets and shots that come into the range is a good idea. The amount of shots fired is a good estimate of the amount of lead on the range and can help determine when reclamation is needed.Size of Shots/BulletsSome technology used for range remediation uses a screening device that scans the range and separates the lead from the soil. Knowing the size of shots used on the range can “maximize the yield of lead shots/bullets” for the machines.Shot Direction and PatternKnowing the shot direction and pattern can help with the effectiveness of containment devices. For example, bullet traps are great for containing shots fired from a specific direction.Best Management Practices (BMPs)BMPs are methods used to keep a shooting range clean and prevent lead migration. Here are some effective and simple BMPs commonly used Bullet/Shot ContainmentEarthen Berms and BackupsThis is the most common BMP at rifle and pistol ranges. The berms and backups are located directly behind the targets ranging from 15-20 feet high with a slope as steep as possible. These backstops can be as simple as a natural hillside, but must be free of large rock and other debris to prevent ricocheting.

Sand Traps
Sand traps are a variation of an earthen berm. These traps are mounds of sand also located directly behind the targets. They are designed to contain, collect, and control lead shots and water access. They are also recommended to be 15-20 feet high with a steep slope. The sand is sifted and removed of any fragments and then reused.Steel TrapsThese traps are again directly positioned behind targets. The shots are directed into a "deceleration chamber" and collected into trays at the bottom. When the trays are full, the lead can be taken out and recycled.Lamella and Rubber Granule TrapsThese traps are tightly hanging strips of rubber with a steel backing. They are positioned behind targets or the targets can be mounted right to the traps. These traps decrease back splatter and limit lead dust escaping into the air and ground.Shock Absorbing ConcreteShock-absorbing concrete is a fairly technological BMP. This concrete allows for easily reclaiming the lead and after the lead is removed, the concrete can be reused as well for sidewalks and curbs.Hand Raking and SiftingThis BMP is great for small range and can be done by club members, volunteers or employees. It concentrates on the surface soil and is low technology and low-cost. Different sizes of screens are used for the soil to be sifted through. After the process is finished, the lead can be recycled or reused.VacuumingThis requires some professional equipment. The vacuum collects lead, soil, and debris. The material is then put through reclamation machinery to separate the lead from everything else. This BMP is great for trap, skeet, and sporting clay ranges.Soil WashingThere are two types of soil washing, wet screening and gravity separation. Wet screening acts much like hand raking and sifting, but on a larger scale. Starting out with large screens, the soil is sifted through continuing on with smaller and smaller screens.

Each time the soil is filtered through a screen, the volume of the soil mixture is reduced. The larger lead particles that are left behind from the larger screens can be taken offsite for recycling and the soil can be reused. Gravity separation is for when the lead particles are similar in size to the surrounding soil particles. A wet mixture of soil and lead is placed in a machine where the denser matter of the mixture, the lead, settles to the bottom separating from the soil.Shooting range remediation is important for its users, owners, surrounding citizens, and the environment. Next time you visit your local shooting range, ask about which BMP they use.For range services, contact us today.
